Day 1: 10 miles that don't count, then 4 we must redo (whomp, whomp..)

Well, after spending a day in Bar Harbor to look around and check out Acadia National Park, we got up at around 5:00 to finish packing our bags and loading up the bike. We made our way into town proper, since we were staying about 10 miles outside of Bar Harbor. It was a hilly ride comin in, and the roads had loose gravel, large potholes, and little to no shoulder. So, a rough start that isn't even on the route.

But, we had to dip the rear tire in the Atlantic, as is tradition for cross-country cyclists. Of course, I didn't take a photo of that, so you'll have to take it on faith that we did so. After dipping the tire, we started on our journey. It was to be a very brief day, though. About 4 miles out, our trailer attachment failed (likely due to the bumpy jostling of the first 10 miles) and we found ourselves tossed to the side of the road. The damage was minimal to the bike and trailer, but severe to the actual attachment...so it was time to lug the bike and trailer back into town and find a bike shop :(

Now, we're waiting around Bar Harbor. Again. The silver lining is that a couple adjustments we were planning on making to the bike are getting taken care of at the shop, too, so we've spared ourselves that effort. We hope to get out of town today, but the nearest campsite is 50 miles out still, so we may be holed up here until tomorrow.

Until then, here are some pictures from yesterday:

Delicious local brews (one has whole Maine blueberries in it!)

A shot from the top of Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the Eastern Seaboard. When your bike doesn't work, you go hiking!

Check out dat ocean.

  1. Well, if this was destined to happen, better when you have access to a bike shop, and not in Podunk, Middle- of- nowhere.

  2. Hoping a tricky day 1 means all the kinks have been ironed out and it's smooth biking here on out :)

  4. The best laid plans! At least you're taking advantage of the opportunity to explore and have fun! Here's hoping the worst will be behind you!
